Research

Explore Seven Sleepers research with Nesi, including historical sources, cave locations, archaeology, Christian and Islamic traditions and evidence.

Seven Sleepers Research

The mystery of the Seven Sleepers has fascinated Christians, Muslims, historians and travelers for centuries. Although the story is traditionally associated with Ephesus, several locations have been proposed as the possible Cave of the Seven Sleepers (Ashab al-Kahf).

My research focuses particularly on Afşin in Kahramanmaraş Province, Turkey, where an ancient cave and religious complex have long been associated with the People of the Cave.

After visiting the site personally, studying its physical characteristics and investigating its religious traditions, I became convinced that Afşin deserves much greater attention in the search for the historical location behind the Seven Sleepers tradition.

This research brings together Christian and Islamic sources, history, geography, local traditions, physical observations and my personal experiences at the cave.

What Is the Purpose of My Research?

The central question is simple:

Where was the original Cave of the Seven Sleepers?

The answer, however, is much more complicated.

Several places claim a connection with the Seven Sleepers. Therefore, identifying the original location cannot depend only on a local tradition or the modern name of a site.

Each proposed location should be examined against the information preserved in early Christian traditions, the Quran, historical records, geography, archaeology and the physical characteristics of the cave itself.

My research asks whether Afşin provides a combination of evidence that could distinguish it from competing locations.

Why I Began Investigating Afşin

My research is not based only on information found in books or online.

I personally traveled to the Eshab-ı Kehf cave at Afşin and spent time investigating the location.

I examined the cave, its surroundings, the changing light, its religious structures and details that I believed could be compared with descriptions associated with the Seven Sleepers.

During my visit, I also had several powerful personal and spiritual experiences that encouraged me to continue investigating the location.

These experiences are part of my personal testimony. They are presented separately from archaeological and historical evidence so visitors can distinguish between documented evidence, interpretation and personal experience.

Researching Christian Sources

One part of the investigation concerns the early Christian Seven Sleepers tradition.

Important questions include:

When do the earliest surviving accounts appear?

Why did the story become associated with Ephesus?

What names were given to the sleepers?

How did the story change as it was translated between Syriac, Greek, Latin and other languages?

And perhaps most importantly:

Does “Ephesus” in the surviving tradition necessarily establish the geographical location of the original event?

These questions require comparison of early manuscripts and the historical development of the tradition rather than relying exclusively on later retellings.

Researching the Quran

The Quran provides another important source.

Surah Al-Kahf (Chapter 18) describes young believers who sought refuge in a cave and remained there for many years.

Several passages are particularly relevant when investigating a physical location.

The Sun — Quran 18:17

The Quran describes the relationship between the cave and the movement of the sun.

This raises a geographical question:

Can the orientation and sunlight conditions of a proposed cave be compared with this description?

The relationship between sunrise, sunset, the cave entrance and its interior is therefore an important part of my investigation of Afşin.

The Dog — Quran 18:18

The Quran describes the sleepers’ dog lying with its forelegs extended at the entrance.

During my own investigation of the Afşin cave, I noticed natural rock formations around dawn that appeared to me to resemble a sleeping person and parts of a dog.

The formations are natural. My interest concerns why their appearance became particularly noticeable under the changing morning light and whether the cave’s lighting conditions deserve further investigation.

The Place of Worship — Quran 18:21

The Quran also records that after the sleepers became known, people proposed constructing a place of worship associated with them.

This makes the religious history and architecture surrounding proposed cave locations particularly interesting.

At Afşin, a historical religious complex developed directly around the cave.

Determining the age and development of these structures is therefore an important part of the research.

Investigating the Afşin Cave

My investigation considers several different categories of evidence.

The physical evidence includes the cave’s orientation, entrance, internal structure, surrounding landscape and interaction with sunlight.

The historical evidence includes ancient settlements in the surrounding region, historical names, religious structures and documentary references to the site.

The religious evidence includes Christian Seven Sleepers traditions, Quranic descriptions of Ashab al-Kahf and the long history of pilgrimage associated with proposed locations.

The local evidence includes traditions preserved among people living around Afşin, naming traditions and stories passed between generations.

Finally, I document my personal observations and spiritual experiences, while distinguishing these from independently verifiable historical evidence.

Afşin and Ephesus

One of the most important parts of the research is comparing Afşin with Ephesus.

Ephesus cannot simply be ignored. It has one of the oldest and strongest documented Christian associations with the Seven Sleepers.

However, an ancient tradition associated with a location does not automatically establish that the underlying event occurred there.

My research therefore asks a different question:

Which location provides the strongest overall correspondence between the ancient descriptions, geography, religious history and physical site?

This requires examining both evidence for and against Afşin.

The Historical Names of Afşin

Historical place names are another area requiring further investigation.

Claims have been made about earlier names associated with Afşin and their possible similarity to names connected with Ephesus.

Rather than assuming that similar-sounding names prove a connection, my research seeks historical documentation showing when particular names were used, in which languages, and how they changed over time.

This is especially important because place names can change significantly across Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Armenian, Arabic, Seljuk and Ottoman periods.

A genuine historical name connection could be important evidence—but it must first be demonstrated through reliable historical sources.

Local Names and Traditions

Another research question concerns the traditional names attributed to the Seven Sleepers.

Some of these names are reported to have remained familiar among communities around the Afşin region.

This raises an interesting possibility:

How far back does the local naming tradition extend?

Historical registers, gravestones, inscriptions, family histories and archival material could potentially provide evidence showing whether these names have been unusually common around Afşin for generations.

If such a pattern can be documented, it would provide valuable information about the depth of the local Ashab al-Kahf tradition.

Oral Testimonies and Stories

Local oral traditions are also worth documenting.

For example, I was told about a couple who reportedly spent a night at the cave praying because they had been unable to have a child.

According to the story, approximately one year later they returned to the site with their newborn baby and told others what had happened.

I did not witness these events myself, so this account should be regarded as oral testimony rather than independently verified evidence.

Nevertheless, collecting such stories can help document the continuing religious importance of the cave and how local people understand the site.

My Personal Experience

My visit to Afşin also became a personal spiritual experience.

After praying inside the cave, I experienced significant positive changes in my life. I became more confident socially and began developing abilities in singing, songwriting, trumpet, piano and dance.

I also experienced moments at the site that I personally interpreted as answers to prayer.

These experiences cannot establish the archaeological identity of the cave, and I do not present them as scientific proof.

They explain, however, why this investigation became much more than an ordinary historical question for me and why I continued researching the Seven Sleepers after leaving Afşin.

Evidence, Interpretation and Faith

One of the most important principles of this project is distinguishing between three categories:

Evidence is information that can potentially be independently examined, such as archaeological remains, historical documents, architecture, geography and astronomical observations.

Interpretation is the conclusion someone draws from that evidence.

Faith and personal experience concern religious belief, prayer and experiences whose meaning may be understood differently by different people.

Keeping these categories separate allows the Seven Sleepers mystery to be investigated seriously without dismissing its religious importance.

What Research Is Still Needed?

The Afşin hypothesis requires considerably more investigation before any historical identification could be considered established.

Future research should include archaeological examination of the cave and surrounding structures, dating of different construction phases, analysis of early Christian and Islamic texts, investigation of historical place names, comparison with competing Seven Sleepers locations, examination of historical pilgrimage records and detailed study of the cave’s orientation and sunlight throughout the year.

Collaboration with archaeologists, historians, theologians, geographers, astronomers and universities could help answer questions that cannot be resolved through individual research alone.

An Open Invitation to Researchers

I welcome researchers, historians, archaeologists, universities and others interested in the Seven Sleepers of Ephesus and Ashab al-Kahf to examine the evidence surrounding Afşin.

The purpose of this project is not simply to repeat a conclusion. It is to encourage further investigation.

If Afşin truly preserves an important part of the history behind the Seven Sleepers tradition, the strongest way to establish that connection is through careful research, documentation, open discussion and independent examination of the evidence.
