Jericho

Explore Jericho and discover its biblical history, religious significance and connection with the spiritual landscape of the Holy Land.

Jericho – Biblical City of the Holy Land

Jericho is one of the most famous ancient cities mentioned in the Bible and an important destination for visitors exploring the Holy Land. Located in the Jordan Valley near the Dead Sea and not far from Jerusalem, Jericho has a history stretching back thousands of years.

The city is connected with important stories from the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament. Its location also makes Jericho a natural stop on a journey between Jerusalem and the Jordan River.

Jericho in the Bible

Jericho is especially well known from the Book of Joshua.

According to the biblical account, the Israelites, led by Joshua, approached Jericho after crossing the Jordan River. The story describes the people marching around the city before its walls fell.

Jericho therefore became closely associated with the Israelites’ entry into the Promised Land.

Jesus and Jericho

Jericho also appears prominently in the New Testament.

The Gospels describe Jesus traveling through or near Jericho. One of the best-known stories is his encounter with Zacchaeus, a tax collector who climbed a sycamore tree so that he could see Jesus passing by.

The area is also associated by Christian tradition with the Mount of Temptation, where Jesus is traditionally believed to have been tempted during his forty days in the wilderness.

These traditions have made Jericho an important destination for Christian pilgrims visiting the Holy Land.

An Ancient City

Jericho is also remarkable for its archaeology.

The archaeological site known as Tell es-Sultan contains evidence of human settlement extending back thousands of years and is recognized for its importance in understanding some of the world’s earliest settled communities.

This combination of archaeology, biblical tradition and living history makes Jericho particularly fascinating.

Visitors can experience not only a place described in sacred texts but also a landscape that has been inhabited by people for an extraordinarily long period of time.

Jericho, Jerusalem and the Jordan River

Jericho lies between the Jerusalem highlands and the Jordan River valley.

Because of its location, the city can be explored as part of a wider journey through biblical and religious sites that includes Jerusalem, Bethlehem, the Mount of Olives, the Jordan River and Bethany Beyond the Jordan.

The dramatic change in landscape when traveling from Jerusalem toward Jericho also makes the journey memorable. The green hills around Jerusalem gradually give way to the dry landscape of the Judean Desert and Jordan Valley.

My Journey to Jericho

Visiting Jericho was part of my own spiritual journey through Jerusalem and the Holy Land.

For me, traveling through these places made the stories of the Bible feel less distant. Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Jericho and the Jordan River are not simply names written in sacred books—they are real places that can still be visited today.

Experiencing them encouraged me to learn more about the prophets, sacred scriptures and the history shared by Judaism, Christianity and Islam.

My journeys through this region became an important part of the experiences I share as Nesi – Messenger of Jerusalem.
