Islamic History
Islamic history begins in the early seventh century in the Arabian Peninsula and developed into a religious and cultural history that has influenced societies across the Middle East, Africa, Asia, Europe and beyond.
From the life of Prophet Muhammad and the first Muslim community to the growth of major Islamic civilizations, Islamic history includes important developments in religion, government, scholarship, architecture, science, art and culture.
Prophet Muhammad and the Beginning of Islam
Prophet Muhammad was born in Mecca around 570 CE. According to Islamic tradition, he began receiving revelations from God through the angel Gabriel around 610 CE.
These revelations continued throughout his prophetic ministry and became the Quran, the sacred scripture of Islam.
Muhammad’s teachings emphasized belief in one God, worship, charity, justice and responsibility toward others.
Mecca and Medina
Mecca and Medina are central to the beginnings of Islamic history.
In 622 CE, Muhammad and his followers migrated from Mecca to Medina in an event known as the Hijra. This event marks the beginning of the Islamic calendar.
Medina became the center of the early Muslim community. Muhammad later returned to Mecca, which became the principal pilgrimage destination of Islam.
The Early Muslim Community
After Muhammad’s death in 632 CE, Muslim leadership passed to the first caliphs.
During the following decades, Muslim-ruled territories expanded beyond the Arabian Peninsula into regions that included parts of the Middle East, North Africa and Persia.
Over subsequent centuries, diverse Islamic societies and political dynasties developed across a vast geographical area.
Jerusalem in Islamic History
Jerusalem became an important city in Islamic history and religious tradition.
Known in Arabic as Al-Quds, Jerusalem is associated in Islamic tradition with Prophet Muhammad’s Night Journey and Ascension.
The Al-Aqsa Mosque and Dome of the Rock stand within the sacred compound Muslims call Al-Haram al-Sharif. The same area is known in Jewish tradition as the Temple Mount, making Jerusalem especially important to the histories of Judaism, Christianity and Islam.
Islamic Civilization
Over the centuries, Muslim societies became important centers of scholarship, medicine, mathematics, astronomy, philosophy, literature and architecture.
Cities such as Baghdad, Damascus, Cairo, Córdoba and Istanbul became major centers of political, intellectual and cultural life during different periods of Islamic history.
Scholars working in the Islamic world also preserved, translated and developed knowledge inherited from earlier Greek, Persian, Indian and other intellectual traditions.
Islam in Andalusia
Muslim rule began in parts of the Iberian Peninsula in the eighth century. The region known as Al-Andalus became home to important cities and centers of culture and learning.
Places such as Córdoba and Granada still preserve remarkable architecture and historical evidence of this period.
My own travels through Andalusia encouraged me to explore more about the long history of interaction among Muslims, Christians and Jews.
The Ottoman Empire
The Ottoman Empire became one of the most influential Muslim empires in world history.
Beginning in Anatolia around the end of the thirteenth century, it eventually controlled territories across southeastern Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. Constantinople, captured by the Ottomans in 1453, became the imperial capital known today as Istanbul.
The Ottoman period left an extensive architectural and cultural heritage across many regions.
